An early Saturday morning officer-involved shooting has left two officers and at least three other individuals injured.

In the early hours of August 5, 2023, the Lafayette Police Department responded to a distress call reporting a fight in progress at the 100 block of S. General Marshall St. near Simcoe in Lafayette.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found themselves confronting the believed parties involved in the altercation. As they attempted to mediate the situation, the officers were met with gunfire from a suspect involved in the incident. The suspect fired upon the uniformed LPD officers, resulting in two officers being shot multiple times.

An additional responding officer returned fire, engaging the suspect. During the exchange of gunfire, three other individuals were struck by bullets.

The suspect responsible for the shooting was eventually apprehended by law enforcement and is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital for injuries sustained during the altercation.

As for the wounded officers, they were quickly rushed to a nearby medical facility for immediate treatment. One of the officers is currently in stable condition, despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. The second officer, who was also shot multiple times, was in critical condition and receiving intensive medical care and as of Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. has been upgraded to stable condition.

LPD investigators are on the scene and actively working to uncover the events that led up to the officer-involved shooting as the community is overwrought with concern and sending prayers to those affected.
