Louisiana is known for many amazing things. Our state's food, culture, and music are celebrated around the world. For every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction, and this rings true all too loudly when it comes to Louisiana and serial killers.

Louisiana Serial Killers

There's no denying the public's interest and fascination with true crime. Sure, horror movies are scary, but the real-life versions of even the least terrifying horror villains are infinitely more disturbing.

Notable Louisiana serial killers include "The Gainsville Ripper" Danny Rolling, "The Bayou Serial Killer" Ronald Joseph Dominique, and "The Baton Rouge Serial Killer" Derrick Todd Lee to name a few.

(Please know that when we say "notable" it is in no way meant to glorify any of the people mentioned.)

The monsters mentioned above are just a handful of serial killers with Louisiana roots.

It's a bit disturbing to think about the ones we don't know about, as in the unsolved case of "The Jennings 8".

So, in the grand scope of things, could Louisiana be responsible for an unfair share of serial killers in the U.S.?

Well...yes.

What Creates A Serial Killer?

A serial killer is defined as "a person who commits a series of murders, often with no apparent motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern."

Technically a serial killer is defined as someone "who murders three or more people in a period of over a month" via cccneb.edu.

Early childhood trauma seems to be a common thread with serial killers.

Trauma such as sexual or physical abuse, emotionally distant parents, parents who were physically absent, emotional abuse, and family dysfunction have been identified as contributing factors in studies.

Research via cccneb.edu points out damage to areas of the brain that control emotional impulses and suppressed empathy also seem to play a big role.

States That Produce the Most Serial Killers

The FBI reports that serial murders happen more frequently in some states than in others.

Taking a look at the FBI's research, crimecapsule.com has compiled a list of states where the most serial murders happen and the states that produce the most serial killers.

Number one on the list is Alaska.

Researchers believe a main contributing factor in Alaska's serial murders is environmental.

Other states on the list of "States That Produce the Most Serial Killers" are California, Washington, and Florida.

The good news is that Louisiana is last on the list.

The bad news is that Louisiana is even on this list, and the list is only seven states.

From crimecapsule.com -

"From 1989 to 2014, Louisiana averaged 13.7 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, more than double the national average of 6.6. A number of factors combined to result in this rate of homicide."
