BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus will seek to expand the number of majority black seats that the state has in its congressional and legislative delegations, when lawmakers redraw political boundaries in a special session later this month.

Baton Rouge Rep. Patricia Smith, head of the black caucus, says the caucus hopes to have two majority minority congressional seats, instead of one, to better represent a black population that is one-third of the state's residents.

Smith also says the caucus will push for more state House and Senate seats that represent minority districts.

The black caucus held an all-day seminar Thursday with the NAACP Legal Defense Center and the Southern University Law Center to discuss the redistricting special session that begins March 20.
