A Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Deputy is currently in critical condition following a self-inflicted gunshot wound sustained off-campus near First Baptist Christian School. The incident occurred in the 200 block of W. Convent St., Lafayette, and did not involve any students, faculty, or staff from the nearby school.

According to Valerie Ponseti, Public Information Officer for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies and investigators quickly responded to the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Ponseti emphasized that there was no threat to the school or the general public at any time.

The injured deputy, whose name has not been released, was transported to a local medical facility. Officials have described his injuries as life-threatening.
