The Louisiana legislature opened its 2014 session on Monday, with a full slate of bills to consider. Some are sure to bring spirited debate, like the 15 marijuana related bills. One bill that will likely face little to no opposition is a proposal to introduce a series of license plates honoring Army Rangers, winners of the Distinguished Service Cross and the late artist, George Rodrigue.
The Advocate reports, the bill cleared the House Transportation committee without debate. A Senate committee considers its own list of proposed specialty plates on Wednesday. the New Iberia Native earned worldwide fame with his Blue Dog paintings. He's the subject of at least a dozen books, and his work is on display in Rodrigue Galleries in Lafayette, La., Carmel, California, and New Orleans. The legendary artist raised more than $2.5 million to benefit recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina. his annual statewide art contests awarded $150,000 in assistance to aspiring students. I visited the Famous Blue Dog Cafe' as part of the 2013 "Eat Lafayette" Campaign. Cancer took George Rodrigue from us last December.
