The change of regime in Egypt is greeted enthusiastically by Egyptian nationals here in Louisiana. Hesham Mesbah (HE-shom mes-BAH) is a professor of journalism at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. He says the resignation of longtime leader Hosni Mubarak is like a dream come true. Mesbah is a graduate of Cairo University. He says Mubarak has been in power ever since the 1981 assassination of President Anwar Sadat, and has ruled with an iron fist--depriving Egyptians of many freedoms. He says the news of his stepping down was a powerful moment.(He says he feels the US will have a stronger ally in the new Egypt.) The Egyptian military will temporarily control government, while a provisional government is installed. Mesbah says anti-Mubarak demonstrators chanted "The People and The Army are One Hand". He says Egyptians trust the military to hand over control to a new democratic government, when the time is right.
