A quiet River Ridge neighborhood awoke to a horrifying tragedy early Saturday morning (Jan. 18), as a father killed his wife and young daughter, injured two other children, and was ultimately shot and killed by Jefferson Parish deputies.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around 4 a.m. at a single-story home in the 10000 block of Stephen Drive. Sheriff Joe Lopinto confirmed that a 46-year-old man fatally shot his 40-year-old wife and their 2-year-old daughter. He also critically wounded a 9-year-old girl, who was rushed to Children’s Hospital, and shot his 13-year-old daughter in the ankle.

The 13-year-old, described as “brave” by Lopinto, managed to hide and call 911 to alert authorities. Deputies found the wife and toddler deceased in the hallway and discovered the two injured children inside the home.

“Our deputies continued into the house itself and encountered the father in a back bedroom,” Lopinto said. “He ended up producing a firearm, and our deputies fired upon him, striking and killing him.”

The sheriff described listening to the 911 call as “devastating” and said investigators are working to determine what led to the tragic event. “I don’t have the answers you’re looking for,” Lopinto said. “I can’t imagine any answers to get us to this point.”

According to NOLA.com, neighbors expressed shock and disbelief, describing the family as appearing happy and ordinary. Kathy Monnerjahn, a neighbor, recalled her granddaughter playing with the children the evening before the tragedy. “They seemed like your normal, average fun-loving family,” she said.

John Monnerjahn added, “There was never any calling the police or fighting and screaming or anything like that.”

Other neighbors echoed similar sentiments, noting the family’s routine presence in the neighborhood, often seen riding their golf cart or decorating their home for the holidays.

James Bell, another resident, said, “Everything seemed all good. That’s why it’s so shocking.”

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. We will update you as we hear more on what police describe as a “tragic situation.”
