A recent survey by the personal finance website WalletHub considered a number of factors in determining their Happiest States in America and according to their metrics, well...the South is a pretty miserable place.

According to WalletHub, seven of America's unhappiest places - and Louisiana is among them - are in the southern US. WalletHub's numbers say that Tennessee (42), Oklahoma (43), Alabama (44), Kentucky (45), Louisiana (46), Mississippi (47) and Arkansas (49) are inhabited by the unhappiest people in America.

Metrics in the survey included Emotional and Physical Well being, Work Environment and Community, among others and it was in one of those, Work Environment, that our Pelican State finished dead last.

And the happiest folks in the USA? Well, WalletHub says the most well adjusted folks live in Hawaii, Utah, Minnesota, California and New Jersey.

And the finance website came up with a few more surprises:

"One thing that doesn’t drive happiness is money. Happiness only increases with wealth up to an annual income of $75,000 to $95000. But one thing that can have a big influence on how we feel about life is where we choose to live.

In this study, WalletHub drew upon the findings of “happiness” research to determine which environmental factors are linked to a person’s overall well-being and satisfaction with life. Previous studies have found that good economic, emotional, physical and social health are all key to a well-balanced and fulfilled life."
