Louisiana Supreme Court Will Not Hear Brian Pope’s Appeal

The Louisiana Supreme Court has taken action on an appeal brought up by attorneys for former Lafayette City Marshal Brian Pope. Pope's legal team had petitioned the court to hear an appeal on his 2018 conviction by a grand jury that centered around misuse of funds from the City Marshal's office.

The court's decision to not take up the appeal will leave Mr. Pope's conviction intact. Pope was sentenced to three years with all but one year suspended in that 2018 ruling.

Pope, suspended from his job as Lafayette City Marshal, attempted to qualify to run for that office in the upcoming November election. That effort was blocked after two state judges ruled that Pope was not qualified to seek the office. The courts ruled that Pope was not a qualified voter and that he lied on his filing documents surrounding the campaign.
