LSU Ends Cajuns’ Season, 6-3, Tigers To CWS
LSU All-American Alex Bregman had been hitless in the NCAA Tournament, going 0-15.
It was just a matter of time.
Bregman's two run single highlighted a four run eighth inning that propelled LSU to a 6-3 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns to win the Baton Rouge Super Regional and lead the Tigers to another trip to the College World Series.
LSU (53-10) was clinging to a 1-0 lead after Kade Scivicque launched a one out homer in the seventh to break a scoreless tie. Designated hitter Danny Zardon led off the eighth with a walk off Cajuns' starter Gunner Leger (6-5). After Jared Foster hit back to the pitcher, Mark Laird singled. Jake Fraley grounded to second to put two runners in scoring position, setting the table for Bregman, who chopped a ball over Leger's head into center field for a 3-0 lead. Reliever Dylan Moore walked Scivicque to put two runners aboard and Connor Hale then sliced a double down the line in right for a triple to score another two runs and a 5-0 lead.
The Cajuns (42-23) finally got to LSU starter Jared Poche (9-1) when Dylan Butler led off the eighth with a double and eventually scored on a Kyle Clement ground out. LSU got the run back in the ninth against Greg Milhorn on a walk, stolen base and Laird's RBI single. The Cajuns refused to go quietly, scoring twice in the ninth on a single by Evan Powell, a triple by pinch hitter Kennon Fontenot and Butler's sacrifice fly. But Blake Trahan popped up to first baseman Chris Chinea, setting off a celebration by the partisan crowd of 11,795 at Alex Box Stadium/Skip Bertman Field.
LSU will play the winner of tomorrow's game between #7 national seed TCU and Texas A&M in their first game in the CWS.
