Category 5 Hurricane Milton Targets Florida, But Here’s How Louisiana Just Got Involved
As Hurricane Milton rapidly strengthens into a Category 5 storm, its direct path toward Florida is already having ripple effects beyond the Sunshine State. Louisiana, though not in the direct path of the storm, is already feeling the impacts as preparations for Sunday’s NFL showdown between the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been altered.
Milton, currently churning through the Gulf of Mexico, is projected to bring devastating winds, storm surges, and heavy rain to the Tampa Bay area. This will prompt urgent evacuations and intensify cleanup efforts from Hurricane Helene, which caused widespread destruction just two weeks ago.
The dangerous storm has forced the Buccaneers to relocate earlier than planned, with the team expected to arrive in New Orleans, LA, as early as Tuesday.
This unexpected move, driven by concerns for player safety and logistical complications in Florida, has added a new angle to their upcoming game against the Saints at the Caesars Superdome.
The Saints, meanwhile, are preparing for their own matchup tonight (Monday, Oct. 7) as they take on the Kansas City Chiefs in a highly anticipated Monday Night Football showdown. However, even as they gear up for tonight’s game, their next contest is already being affected by Milton. The early arrival of the Buccaneers raises questions—will Tampa Bay have an advantage with extra time to settle in New Orleans, or will the disruption put them at a disadvantage?
Although the powerful hurricane has forced the Bucs’ to make an early departure for Louisiana, they hope to keep their focus and their hometown in mind as the storm strengthens. "The safety of our players and their families is our top priority," the Buccaneers said in a statement. "We’ve made the decision to relocate to New Orleans early to ensure proper preparations for Sunday’s game."
The NFL is no stranger to adapting schedules due to extreme weather. With Milton expected to make landfall in Florida on Wednesday, authorities are urging residents to take precautions, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has emphasized the importance of clearing debris to avoid dangerous projectiles in high winds.
For the Saints, tonight’s game against the Chiefs will set the tone for a crucial week, as they hope to improve on their 2-2 record and quickly regroup in time to prepare for the Buccaneers—now settling into the Crescent City earlier than initially planned. Whether this shift will have any impact on the outcome remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: nature has entered the chat and the Bucs may be in town before the Saints get back from KC.
While Louisiana may be spared the full brunt of Milton, the Gulf Coast is too connected for anyone ever to be 100% out of the woods. If Louisiana only has to worry about how this move will affect a Saints game, I think it's safe to say we're in a good position.
Florida, on the other hand, we should be sending them all the thoughts, prayers, and good energy possible in hopes that they can brave this approaching storm.
