Most Jeff Davis Parish Schools Will Return to Class Next Week
Superintendent of Jefferson Davis Parish Schools Kirk Credeur calls the cleanup effort made in his parish in regard to schools "Herculean". I'd have to agree with that assessment. After seeing just how badly parts of Jeff Davis Parish were damaged by Hurricane Laura I was thinking a return to school would be a lot later than sooner. Fortunately, some very hard working people in Jeff Davis Parish have proved me wrong.
Superintendent Credeur has announced that with the exception of Lacassine High School all students in the parish will return to class on Monday, September 14th. Lacassine High which sustained more damage than many other schools in the parish is set to open on Wednesday but that date could change as work continues.
The original Jeff Davis returns to school plan, back when we only had a pandemic to worry about, was to have a full return of face-to-face learning as the state moved into Phase 3 of the coronavirus recovery plan. So, the school system will move forward in operation under Phase 2 guidelines which call for face-to-face instruction for Pre-K through Grade 5. The system will operate on an A/B schedule for grades 6-12.
So, kudos to the educators, administrators, students, faculty, and most importantly parents who have helped the school system recover more quickly than anticipated. It's going to be a great school year despite the stormy start and the pandemic end of the last school year. We are anticipating great things from Jeff Davis Parish Schools, after all, hard work never goes unrewarded.
