With a host of traffic accidents on Lafayette roads yesterday, Master Trooper Brooks David warns distracted driving, and not wearing seat belts, leads to many accidents within Acadiana.

The House Transportation Committee is considering a bill today that would raise the penalty for texting while driving from $175 up to $500. Legislators are also considering an increase in penalties for not wearing seat belts.

David said Acadiana's traffic fatality rate is consists of many drivers who were not wearing their seat belts.

He told KPEL's Rob and Bernie this morning the key to reducing incidents of distracted driving and seat belt compliance is education.

Wearing seat belts and avoiding distractions inside your vehicle can save your life or the life of others!

David suggests making sure everyone (children and adults) have their seat belts buckled before the vehicle is put in drive.
