Plans for Six Flags NOLA Moving Forward, Finally
As Louisianians are gearing up for the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season in a couple of weeks, we are still on edge from the drastic events from last year. And even more hard to believe, it's been 16 years since one of our worst hurricanes ever, which of course was Hurricane Katrina.
According to WWL, two proposals are being considered for redeveloping one of the worst-hit sites in the city, the former Six Flags New Orleans. The 146.2-acre abandoned theme park in New Orleans East has been the face of the disaster for years, and is currently owned by the Industrial Development Board of New Orleans.
City leaders met earlier this week to consider once again what to do with the property, and two proposals will be moving forward at this time. One of them is for Bayou Phoenix,, which is being led in part by a local businessman and New Orleans East resident named Troy Henry. His proposal is that the property be used for a water park, hotel, sports complex and travel center. According to WWL "The other main contender is Kiernan West and S.H.I.E.L.D. 1. That one is backed by Drew Brees and Saints Linebacker Demario Davis. The project hopes to build an urban farm, educational centers, and transportation hub."
The two finalists will now have 30 days to convince panel members and city officials that their idea is the best before a decision will be made. Read more on the project moving forward, even if it's 16 years later, from WWL.
