Plans for another new school in Lafayette Parish are underway as bids will go out soon for the new Billeaud Elementary School in Broussard.

According to The Daily Advertiser, the school will be at the corner of Fairfield Drive and Marteau Road and is expected to be the centerpiece of a new residential and commercial development.

Jeff Augustine, project manager for Architects Southwest, says the school will be 91,000 square feet and will have two stories.

"We were looking for a compact and economical structure," Augustine said. "This design worked best as far as getting around the building and to the cafeteria."

Younger students will have class on the lower floor while older students will use the second floor.

Other features of the school will include an administrative wing, a multipurpose cafeteria/auditorium area, a media center as well as rooms dedicated for music and special education.

The school will be able to accommodate 1,000 students. About 750 are expected to enroll when it opens in the fall of 2019.

This is all part a whole new slate of construction planned by the Lafayette Parish School System in their effort to accommodate more than 31,000 students. All total, the projects are expected to cost more than $49 million.
