Redistricting Process Wraps Up Today
The House and Senate governmental affairs committees’ trip around the state to receive public input on redistricting ends today. Two legislative committees that are taking the lead on the redistricting process wrap up a series of meetings today. The House and Senate governmental affairs committees are traveling the state to receive public input. Demographer Elliot Stonecipher is following the hearings and says the redrawing of the congressional districts are a big topic. The redistricting public hearings began in the middle of February and end today with meetings in Alexandria and Monroe. Stonecipher says citizens who attended the meetings are also interested in the changing districts for the state legislature. Lawmakers will begin a special session on March 20th to redraw political boundaries for Congress, state legislature, P-S-C and other elected offices. Stonecipher says there has already been disagreement within the state legislature over new district lines. He says the public comment taken since February 17th could help solve those arguments.
