Short on Cash? Restaurant Lets You Work Off Your Bill
There’s a restaurant out there that will let you eat up without making you pay up.
But, there is a catch.
While we in the US are greeted with gimmicks like Chili’s two-for-20, a restaurant in the Spanish city of Terrassa has come up with a novel way to serve cash-strapped customers, as the country continues to grapple with a recession.
People who frequent La Trobada, which opened in March, can simply work off the tab, putting a twist on the old adage that there's no such as a free lunch.
The eatery gives customer the option of enjoying a three-course meal (along with bread, water and wine) if they agree to work in the eatery for an hour as a way to pay off their bill. Customers can work off their debt in the kitchen by cleaning or out front as a server. Let's see Chili's try that without people helping themselves to a few dozen loaded potato skins.
The meal at La Trobada runs $8.35 and has been somewhat of a hit, with about half of all customers working off the bill, instead of going the more traditional route of paying in money.
Spain has been dealing with a recession in recent months, with the unemployment rate hovering over more than 25%, so this deal certainly appeals to a healthy portion of the population.
La Trobada’s manager believes the first year of this promotion will result in more than 15,000 hours of free labor, adding it is a positive for people who take advantage. He said, "This is aimed at people wanting to regain and strengthen their self-esteem. People wanting to improve their day-to-day situation. This gives them hope for the future.”
Not to mention gives them the option of putting down any signs that read "Will work for food."
