Second Harvest Food Bank Lafayette Food Drive
The Second Harvest Food Bank is hosting a community food drive in April.
KATC is reporting that the food bank is hosting the drive in recognition of this month being Senior Hunger Awareness Month.
WHY DO WE NEED A FOOD DRIVE?
According to the report, Louisiana ranks almost dead last on yet another list, as 23% of seniors in Louisiana are not always certain of how they will get their next meal, which is why Second Harvest is hosting the event.
Many seniors live on a fixed income. They skip meals or choose between buying groceries or paying their rent or utility bills, or even medication - Paul Scelfo, Second Harvest Food Bank via KATC
HOW CAN I HELP?
Here's where you come in to save the day: you can drop off donations of non-perishable food items directly at either Second Harvest location: 700 Edwards Avenue in Lafayette, or 215 E Pinhook Road in Lafayette. They accept donations Monday through Friday, from 7:30 am until 4:00 pm.
WHAT SHOULD I DONATE?
Some of the items you should consider donating include foods that are easy to prepare but are formulated with health in mind (low sugar, low sodium, etc), including:
Breakfast cereal, Rice, Flour, Grits, Canned Vegetables and Fruits, Tomato Sauce, Dried Fruit, Canned Tuna, Canned Chicken, Dried Beans, Canned Chili and other Soups, Nuts, Powdered or Shelf-Stable Milk, Vegetable Oil, etc. - Second Harvest
The Second Harvest Food Bank website provides a more complete list of suggested food items you should consider donating.
Get together with your family or your office to recognize Senior Hunger Awareness Month and make a donation. When you make a donation, you make a difference.
