Sen. Cassidy Bill Would Prevent the IRS from Targeting Conservatives
United States Senators Bill Cassidy and Mike Braun have introduced legislation to prevent the IRS from being used as a political weapon against conservative non-profit organizations.
In nan official release, Cassidy said, “The IRS should never target an American because of his or her political beliefs. This bill protects nonprofits and their supporters from political bullying by rogue IRS agents.”
Both Cassidy and Braun want to make sure that a Biden run Internal Revenue Service doesn't play political favorites like it did during the Obama years.
“We saw during the Obama years that the IRS was used as a political weapon to target conservative nonprofits," says the Indiana Republican, "Under H.R.1 the Biden IRS would be empowered to block tax-exempt status and publicly expose a group’s donors to harassment from liberal groups and the media if their beliefs are deemed to be politically unfavorable. This bill will prevent the IRS from being weaponized against conservatives like it was under President Obama,”
From 2010 to 2012, they say, the Obama IRS spent over two years targeting conservative tax-exempt groups. In May of last year the Trump administration issued a ruling preventing the agency from targeting certain tax-exempt groups based on their political beliefs. The Cassidy / Braun legislation would codify that rule.
The bill is officially co-sponsored by 43 other Republican Senators and has already been endorsed by organizations including Americans for Prosperity, Americans for Tax Reform, Freedom Works, Heritage Action for America and the National Taxpayers Union.
