Severe Weather Threat Should Stay North of Lafayette and Acadiana

Forecasters with the Storm Prediction Center are monitoring a storm system that is moving across the nation's mid-section early this morning. By tonight thunderstorm activity associated with that system could affect residents of Louisiana. How strong those storms will be and just who might be affected is what forecasters are currently working on as we speak.

As of now, the consensus suggests that the greatest threat for severe storms in the state will be confined to extreme northeastern Louisiana. That part of the state as well as portions of southern Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta are in the SPC's Enhanced Risk Zone for severe storms. 

The rest of the state, basically from Alexandria north is in the Slight Risk Zone for severe storms later today and tonight. Meanwhile, the US 190 and I-10 corridors of the state are currently in the Marginal Risk Zone according to the severe weather experts.

Our local weather expert, Rob Perillo tells us that Lafayette and Acadiana for the most part will have a windy and warm day today. The threat of showers and storms won't really creep into our area until much later tonight. In fact, Rob's run of the HRRR model, you can see part of that in the image above, suggests that our heaviest weather will happen while most of you are asleep.

It does look as if we will be under the gun for strong storms or even severe storms from midnight tonight (Wednesday) until about sunrise Thursday morning. Rainfall amounts will generally be half an inch to an inch or so. However, higher amounts are possible under some of the stronger storms.

Thursday should be a more calm day around the area, at least where the weather is concerned but Friday should usher in another active weather pattern which will bring a threat of more rain into South Louisiana for at least the early part of the weekend.

Since the weather forecast might keep you inside over the next day or so, now would be a great time to do a little research into summertime fun. We certainly think a little time at the pool would be nice, especially if it was time spent at these pools.
