Sinkhole At Bayou Corne Stabilizes
It was one of the most incredible sights I have ever witnessed. The way entire trees seemed to be swallowed by the Earth as the waters of Bayou Corne in Assumption Parish flowed quickly into an ever expanding sinkhole.
There has been concern for sometime now that the sinkhole would continue to grow larger and larger eventually swallowing homes instead of just trees and wetlands. The good news is the sinkhole and the land surrounding Bayou Corne appear to have stabilized.
To be fair the sinkhole is continuing to grow larger but not at the intense rate it was growing in 2013. Assumption Parish Director of Emergency Operations John Boudreaux told the Louisiana Radio Network,
Even though it’s quite deep, it’s showing less signs of dramatic growth with that depth.
At its deepest the sinkhole is 174 feet deep. It covers an area of about 35 acres. There is still an area on the eastern side of the sinkhole that is under a mandatory evacuation.
The sinkhole came about after Texas Brine inadvertently drilled into a salt dome. That company is now paying the consequences for the mistake. They will continue to manage the sinkhole for the time being.
Experts suggest that over time the sinkhole will continue to grow larger even though it has certainly slowed down its rapid growth from 2013.
