BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Special elections will be held in January to fill a vacant Acadiana area state Senate seat and a soon-to-be vacant New Orleans state House seat, legislative leaders announced Tuesday.

The primary elections will be held Jan. 22, with general elections if needed on Feb. 19. The sign-up period will be Dec. 15-17.

The Senate seat is open because Troy Hebert, an independent from Jeanerette, resigned to take the job as Louisiana's alcohol and tobacco control commissioner. The seat represents parts of Iberia, Lafayette, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.

The New Orleans-based House seat will become vacant Jan. 1 when Democrat Cedric Richmond resigns to take his new job as congressman for Louisiana's 2nd District. Richmond won the congressional election Nov. 2.

A spokesman for the Secretary of State's Office said the special elections will cost an estimated $200,000.
