Special Session Is a Wrap
The special session is over. Lawmakers did approve a measure to bring lower auto insurance rates to the Louisiana. The bill was passed on veto-proof lines but is less expansive than previous tort legislation that did not have the support of the Governor.
The bill passed with a few hours left in the special session.
Governor Edwards applauded this version of the bill, which was a compromise between both sides.
Lawmakers also ok'd the $34 billion dollar budget for the fiscal year that kicks off today. The Legislature also approved a series of tax breaks for COVID-impacted businesses.
The House and Senate wrapped up Tuesday after awarding millions of dollars in tax breaks to businesses and finishing the state’s operating budget a day before it must take effect. The budget keeps TOPS funding intact and also protects K-12 education and social services from cuts. But we could see some small cuts to higher education and the health department.
