MONROE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana Republican Party says state Rep. Noble Ellington has officially switched his party affiliation, giving the GOP a majority control of the House for the first time since Reconstruction.

Republican Party Chairman Roger Villere confirmed the switch Friday, and welcomed Ellington to the "new conservative majority in the House."

Ellington had been a prominent member of the state's Democratic Party for more than 20 years.
