The movement to clean up areas of Acadiana that need a little love continues to gain momentum through the help of civic partners, concerned citizens, and Parish Proud.

If you want to clean up as part of any local initiative, the various projects that are being held as a result of involvement with local groups continue throughout the region.

This Saturday, May 1st, several groups are coming together for an event aimed at cleaning up litter in the area of Scott around the West Regional Library and Highway 90 according to a press release from Parish Proud.

One of the biggest long-range problems with litter is that it often will end up in the Vermilion River. Cigarette butts are one of the biggest problems.

If you would like to help clean up a section of Highway 90 in Scott, you can meet with the other volunteers this Saturday at the Lafayette Public Library's West Regional location at 501 Old Spanish Trail. You can get information about the event, and how you can join the fight to clean up litter by clicking here.

Parish Proud has been coordinating with other anti-litter groups to become a clearinghouse for disseminating information. Parish Proud provides the materials that a group needs to have a successful event, so you don't even have to provide the raw materials.  The following is what they provide to your group so you can clean up:

  • Trash Bags
  • Litter Grabber
  • Equipment
  • Vest (if you don't have one)

Since they have done this a time or two before, they also have some suggestions on what you need to bring:

  • You should wear closed-toes shoes.
  • Bring a hat.
  • Bring sunscreen.
  • Wear a mask.

The event will start at 8 o'clock Saturday morning, and it will wrap up at 11 a.m.
