Three UL Softball Players Receive Honors
Three members of the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns softball team received honors as UL student-athletes were welcomed back to campus, recently.
The trio of players were honored at during the Welcome Back Convocation, which was held last week.
Junior outfielder Raina O'Neal was the recipient of the Sawyer Camillio Memorial Award, which is named in the honor of the former UL volleyball player who passed away in 2012, due to complications from back surgery.
A native of Richmond, Texas, O'Neal was named an All-Sun Belt Second Team selection, as well as being named to the Sun Belt Conference Academic Honor Roll, after hitting .326, to go along with 10 home runs and 36 runs batted in, in her first year with the Cajuns.
Speaking of players in their first year; senior outfielder Sarah Hudek was named the Ragin' Cajuns Newcomer of the Year.
A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Hudek was named All-Sun Belt Conference First Team and the Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year last season, after hitting .331 with 11 homers and 39 RBI's.
Finally, senior pitcher Summer Ellyson picked up Play of the Year honors.
A native of Lafayette, Ellyson a Third Team NFCA All-American last season, as well as the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year, after leading the nation in victories, with 39.
In addition, the entire squad was honored for their 29-game win streak, which helped them to an impressive overall record of 52-6 in 2018.
As we told you last week, former UL catcher Lexie Comeaux was named the UL Female Athlete of the Year.
