LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) - A major grocery chain merger that has been causing waves in the retail world is one step closer to reality as the two chains involved announce which stores will be sold off as part of the deal.

Kroger and Albertsons, which have been working on the merger deal for months now, made the list of stores available publicly for the first time, and of the dozens of stores that will be sold, some are right here in Louisiana and even more are next door in Texas.

Originally, the plan was going to impact two Louisiana stores and 26 Texas stores. However, after pushback from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the chains expanded the list of stores to be divested.

Kroger, Albertsons to Sell Even More Stores in Louisiana and Texas in Merger Deal

The enhanced agreement put forward by the two chains is meant to satisfy the FTC, the agency that vowed to get a judge to stop the merger between Kroger and Albertsons.

Several stores across Texas and Louisiana will be impacted by the divestiture plan put forward by Kroger. Looking at the information that has become public about the merger, 28 stores in Texas will be sold, and two more will be divested in Louisiana.

Texas is Albertsons’ second-biggest state in terms of number of stores: it clocks in with 44 Albertsons locations. Louisiana, meanwhile, has a handful of stores. Under the original agreement, Louisiana would see two stores sold and Texas would see 26 sold. All stores slated to be divested would be sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers.

In the list released publicly, we now know that the Louisiana locations are both Albertsons stores, one in Shreveport and the other in Lake Charles. In Texas, the 20 locations are made up of Albertsons and Kroger brand stores, as well as Tom Thumb, Market Street, and Randall's locations.
