HOUSTON, Texas (KPEL News) - Amazon is a juggernaut when it comes to online shopping. If you want it, you can find it (as well as 75 variants of whatever "it" is).

Recently, though, they have rolled out a new, proactive feature that makes shopping for quality products even easier - and it also protects consumers.

The online mega-mall has launched a special page that details recalls and safety product alerts for shoppers. The launch has been met with praise from consumer advocates and helps folks like us make sure we're getting the best product available.

"Our Product Safety Team proactively investigates and addresses reported safety complaints and incidents to ensure customer protection from potential product-related safety risks," the site explains. "We closely monitor public recall alert websites and receive notifications from vendors and sellers. Upon discovering a product recall, we immediately halt affected product offerings, and promptly inform both customers and sellers involved about the recall. For more information visit our Safety Information, Recalls and Legal Notices Page."

But because Amazon has so many products available to buy, it also makes sense that there are a lot of items that end up being recalled.

What Is a Recall?

A product recall is a process initiated by a company to remove a product from the market due to safety concerns or defects that could harm consumers. Recalls are typically issued when a product is found to pose a risk, such as causing injury, illness, or death. This process involves notifying consumers, distributors, and retailers about the recall, providing instructions on what to do with the affected product, and often offering remedies such as repairs, replacements, or refunds.

Product recalls can occur for various reasons, including:

Safety Hazards: Products that present potential hazards, like fire risks, choking hazards, or exposure to toxic substances.

Defects: Items that do not function as intended, which can lead to accidents or injuries.

Contamination: Food, pharmaceuticals, or other consumables that are contaminated with harmful bacteria, chemicals, or foreign objects.

Regulatory Non-compliance: Products that fail to meet regulatory standards or labeling requirements.

Companies may voluntarily initiate recalls or be prompted to do so by regulatory agencies like the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in the U.S. The goal of a recall is to protect public health and safety by preventing further harm from potentially dangerous products.
