Grammy-Award winning Acadiana musician Wayne Toups will "christen" a watercraft designed by the UL Lafayette Civil Engineering Department Sunday.

The SS Wayne Toups, a concrete canoe, will set sail in Oxford, Miss. on Friday, March 20 where the team of civil engineering students who designed the vessel will compete in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) National Concrete Canoe Competition.

The public is invited to support the civil engineering students and supporters who will meet this Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Madison Hall parking lot where Toups will autograph the canoe bearing his name.

The Unvivesity of Mississipp (Ole Miss) will host the annual ASCE Deep South Conference where the Ragin Cajuns' Civil Engineering team will put the SS Wayne Toups to the test in a series of races demonstrating the students' concrete canoe design. Other universities competing will include LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech, and UNO.
