He was a Lafayette treasure.

Lafayette is mourning the loss of the Honorable Judge Kaliste J. Saloom, Jr., who passed away December 2nd.

And, residents and merchants in the city have an opportunity to honor the Judge this Friday and Saturday.

To honor Judge Saloom's contributions to the community, the public has been invited to display a token of respect at the corner of Ambassador Caffery and the road bearing his name, Kaliste Saloom Road, originally named after the judge's father.

"I spoke with Kal (Kaliste Saloom III, the judge's son) about it," organizer Nancy Fawcett said, "and he thought it was a nice gesture and his father would approve."

The signs of respect would include bows, streamers, ribbons, flowers, balloons or UL or mini American flags.

"Kal wanted to know how we would pull it off," Fawcett said.  "I told him we wouldn't...Lafayette would."

Business owners have the option of flying their American flags at half-staff.

And, since the Judge was a UL (SLI) graduate and an avid Cajuns fan, the community is asked to wear red on Friday.

Visitation will be at Martin and Castille Funeral Home, downtown location, from 10 am to 8 pm Friday and at Our Lady of Fatima Saturday from 8 am until time of service at 10 am. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery.
