Acadiana Postgame High School Football Forecast Week Six
Week Number Six's Football Forecast highlights a possible District 7-1A determiner between VC and AES, the Crowley Gents and some 3-5A drama.
Whenever the schedules came out, high school football fans across Acadiana marked their calendars for Ascension Episcopal vs Vermilion Catholic. The Screamin' Eagles clutched the district in their claws the last four years, but the Blue Gators are trying to rip it from their talons this season.
Michael Desormeaux's AES group is a dual-edged sword, with Jake Arceneaux heading up the passing game and Ja'Ciery Linzer delivering the bruises with the ball and on defense. VC has a couple two-way playmakers of their own in Hunter Frith, Emile Trahan and Tyler Derouen. Frith's 20 TD's on the season should send a clear warning to opposing defenses: mistakes will be exploited. Expect tons of points in this game, and probably some late drama.
Game number two features on of 4A's finest, the Crowley Gents. Ty'Von Griffin will be playing football on Saturdays, so the folks in Crowley need to enjoy him while he's playing prep ball. The Gents are undefeated and legitimate threats to make a playoff run with a passing game and defense to compliment the beast in the backfield. DeRidder is no slouch themselves, but Crowley looks pretty impenetrable.
If DeRidder can keep up with the track meet like Cecilia, who barely lost, 49-50, it could be close against Crowley...but don't expect it. District 3-4A might be at the mercy of the Gents.
On News Talk 96.5 KPEL, Ian Auzenne and Brandon Comeaux will have Lafayette High and Barbe in a District 3-5A match. It might be one of the most unpredictable districts in the entire state, and the phrase "anything can happen" isn't a cliche when it comes to these teams on a week-to-week basis.
When LHS shows up with focus, their defense can stifle the best of them. Likewise, Barbe's coaching staff has to believe they're better than their 2-3 record would indicate. One team will move to 3-3 and the other will fall to 2-4. Even more significant, this one counts for district play. The way to salvage a rough to start is to pick up the pieces in your own sandbox.
The sand is starting to fall in the hourglass as we look at the approach to the playoffs. With district play in the mix, each week could hold the make or break game for the season. Ready for some drama on Friday night?
