In a Sunday afternoon press conference, Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory was asked about the likelihood that Festival International would be held in Lafayette this year. Unfortunately for those that love "Fesitval" the Mayor-President's response was not that positive.

It would be great to do that. I’m going to tell you every day that goes by, every briefing that we get that goes by, it’s looking more and more likely that it’s not going to happen, in full candor.

Those words coupled with new guidelines issued over the weekend by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention certainly do not point Festival International taking place this year. At least, on the dates, the event was originally scheduled for.

Guillory suggested in his comments that he along with Festival organizers are working hard to save one of Lafayette and Acadiana's largest public events.

Look, Festival’s a great event, to display our culture to the world, it’s a great economic boon to our region, so if there’s a way that we can still have Festival, while at the same time protecting the public, that’s what we’re going to do

Just to clarify, there have been no formal discussions held on a postponement of Festival International at this time. Organizers are continuing to monitor data and information from the Centers for Disease Control and the Louisiana Department of Health.

We can expect a decision on whether the Festival will be postponed or rescheduled in the coming days. Festival International is currently scheduled for downtown Lafayette April 22nd through April 26th.
