The FDA has found unacceptable levels of a cancer-causing ingredient in a diabetes drug and is asking 5 companies to issue a recall, according to the Wall Street Journal.

I don't know about you, but when I read "unacceptable levels of a cancer-causing ingredient" I thought to myself "Wait, there are acceptable levels of a cancer-causing ingredient in this drug?" but, alas, I digress.

The drug in question is Metformin, and higher-than-acceptable levels of a contaminant (N-Nitrosodimethylamine) linked to cancer have been found in several batches of the drug.

The agency is telling the 5 companies producing the drug in question to recall the drug but is encouraging patients who have been prescribed the drug to continue taking it until their doctor can prescribe a substitute, according to WUSA9.

The FDA added that the generic brands of the drug haven't shown unacceptable levels of the contaminant.

An ingredient linked to cancer? I guess that, sometimes, you have to take risks to get the reward.
