On Monday, St. Mary Parish deputies received information that a Franklin man had kidnapped a woman from Amite County in Mississippi.

When detectives received information that the woman was being treated at Franklin Foundation Hospital, they went there to find 41-year-old Joseph Lightfoot.

Detective say they found the victim's car at the hospital, and then they saw Lightfoot heading towards that car.  The detective issued multiple verbal commands for the man to stop, but police say Lightfoot ignored the commands, got into the car, and he took off.

Police followed Lightfoot to Chatsworth Road, where Lightfoot stopped the car, and got out.  The suspect then ran to an apartment while officers set up a perimeter around the apartment complex.

Two nearby schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution, and a detective found Lightfoot hiding under a bed.

Lightfoot still would not comply with an officer's demands, but after a brief struggle, they were able to apprehend him.

Lightfoot was arrested on the following charges:

  • Resisting an officer
  • Resisting an officer by flight
  • Resisting an officer with force
  • A warrant from Amite County Sheriff's Office (Mississippi) for kidnapping

Lightfoot was taken to the St. Mary Parish Jail while waiting to be extradited to Mississippi.
