Golden Bears Maul Vikings To Keep District Title Hopes Alive

Two things needed to happen for Carencro High to still have a shot at the District 4-4A title - Teurlings needed to beat St. Thomas More and CHS needed to take care of their own business and not look past a struggling but visibly fired up Northside squad.

The Golden Bears got both results they needed on Friday night. The Rebels beat the Cougars 42-28 and they beat the Vikings 41-6.

The game was never in doubt as CHS dominated in all phases. They began on defense by forcing the Vikings offense, an offense with some new wrinkles in it due to interim head coach John Simmons new game plan, into a 3-and-out on their first drive (a theme for much of the night), and then by scoring their first touchdown on their first possession.

The Golden Bears got on the scoreboard when QB Gabe Duffy took a handoff from backup QB Carl Randall in their wishbone package and powered it in from 2 yards out for a quick 6-0 lead.

It didn't take long for Carencro to expand on their lead as Randall threw a 1-yard TD pass to RB Tyreik Campbell to push the score to 13-0.

The Bears would score one more TD in the first quarter as Duffy ran it in from one yard out to make the score 20-0.

Two more touchdowns were scored by the Bears in the second quarter as Treylon Barnaba went 42 yards off a Tyler Shelvin punt and into the end zone to push the score to 27-0. Duffy then capped off the first half scoring by rushing for a 27-yard TD to make the score 34-0 at the half.

Each team would score one touchdown in the second half - Carencro once again on a 50-yard TD run by Kendarious Poullard and Northside on a Markalyon Boyd 22-yard TD pass to Mark Bonnet with 1:04 left to go in the game.

With the win, Carencro improves to 5-3, 2-1. If they beat Teurlings in the Cro-Dome on Friday, the Golden Bears have a good chance of finishing the season in a 3-way tie with the Rebels and the Cougars in District 4-4A.

With the loss, Northside falls to 2-6,1-2. They next play at Beau Chene on Friday.
