High School Bans Yearbook Photo of Student With Her Baby
Wheatmore High School in Trinity, North Carolina has found itself in one mother of a controversy.
The school has made waves by banning a yearbook picture featuring a student holding her baby son.
The school asked seniors to pose with a prop that represents who they are. Caitlin Tiller, 17, decided to use her son, Leelin.
He helped me get to where I am today. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without him.”
Tiller, who gave birth in April of last year, is hardly the type of teen mom train-wreck you might see on MTV. She graduated in December and began college in January. She also works a part-time job for 30 hours a week.
Tiller claims school officials told her the photo was being yanked because it promotes teen pregnancy, although she steadfastly believes it shows her love for her child. Her mother supports her, too, saying, ““She took responsibility. They should be proud that the students are willing to stay in school, graduate and make something of themselves and not try and hide it.”
School officials, meanwhile, say they wouldn’t go ahead with the picture because the yearbook is supposed to be about the students and not their families.
Tiller, incidentally, had the option of replacing the rejected photo with another shot, but she declined to do so.
What do you think? Should a teen mother (or father) be allowed to pose for a yearbook photo with their child?
