Beryl intensified to a hurricane with 80 mph sustained winds just as it came ashore early Monday morning. Beryl is moving northward and should take a bit of an easterly turn as it continues through the eastern third of the Lone Star State.

Tropical storm warnings are in effect today for many counties that border Angelina County to the south and east, this includes Jasper, Tyler, Polk, Trinity, and Houston. Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties are NOT under this warning, however, tropical-storm-force winds are expected with some of the bands of rain in the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area as the center of Beryl moves just west of the cities.

A Flood Watch is in effect for the entire East Texas area.

The remnants of Beryl will continue across the ArkLaTex tonight and then move towards Arkansas.

When Will Lufkin/Nacogdoches Get the Worst?

Rain bands from Beryl will move across the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area just after sunrise. Showers and occasional thunderstorms will continue throughout the day and evening. Some areas could receive up to a half foot of accumulated rainfall.

The worst of the wind gusts are expected to take place during the late afternoon and evening hours. Don't be surprised to experience wind gusts near 50 mph between 4 pm and 7 pm this evening.

The Pineywoods will also be at risk for tropical 'spin up' tornadoes.

Once the sun sets, forecasters predict that the worst of Beryl will have moved on from the Lufkin and Nacogdoches area. Periodic wind gusts and a few downpours are possible until midnight, but the center of Beryl will have moved closer to Texarkana by that time.

Isolated flooding and numerous power outages seem to be the biggest East Texas threats from Beryl.
