Don’t Be Fooled: Lafayette Parish Warns Against Phone Scam Tactics

Whenever you turn around, you hear about another scam, and that's the case again.

This time, it is a phone scam that deals with law enforcement agencies.

According to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, phone scammers are posing as members of local law enforcement. They will claim that they need money to make a warrant go away. They may try to say you have a ticket, and they will make it go away if you give them money over the phone.

Please do not fall for any claim someone makes over the phone. Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Department Spokeswoman Valerie Ponsetti says their office and most other law enforcement agencies will never call and ask you for money over the phone.

Ponsetti's press release explains the following:

If you are contacted by a caller requesting money and claiming to be law enforcement, do NOT transfer any form of payment to the caller and contact law enforcement immediately.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office wants residents to know they will never be asked for payment over the phone.

Here is a TikTok video of a police officer who a scammer called. Ann Stephens posted the exchange to her Facebook page, and it appeared on TikTok. She turned the tables on him!

Whether the person has a foreign accent or they sound life they are from around here, never give anyone anything over the phone.
