When growing up, you might have been taught that firefighters fight fires and that they end up rescuing kittens from trees. This is all true of course, but they are also called out to all manner and circumstance of rescues, and what happened recently was quite adorable. We found the story on WBRZ and had to share it with you.

What do you do when you see a family trying to cross the street and you are a firefighter? You make the traffic stop and let them walk on by, but this wasn't a typical family. It was a scenario of quack, quack, waddle, waddle, quack, quack waddle, waddle, and then whoops!

Duck and Drain

So, what happened? Members of the St. George Fire Department saw a family of ducks trying to cross the road, so they stopped traffic to let them cross, but one duckling didn't make it. The duckling dropped between the bars of the drain and into the drain! The other family members just kept on waddling away.

The firefighters jumped into action to save the duckling. They opened the bars to the drain, put a latter into the drain, and rescued the sweet little duck. But, what to do with him?

The duck family had already taken off so they called Chief Kling who then started working the phones.

Chief Kling was able to track down For the Birds of Acadiana group to share the story about this little duck. That's when they found out this is a duck that is a federally protected species. They agreed to take on the job of rehabbing this duck.

The duck is a Black-bellied Whistling Duck. And while that's his classification, let's just call him cute and he has a home in Lafayette!!! To the couple in Lafayette with this rehab group "Thank you" for all of your hard work. The St. George Police Department found out the group had taken in 260 orphaned and injured birds just in May!

They are always busy as they are the only rehabilitation for orphaned and injured birds in this area, and the other one in the state is Shreveport.

These firefighters and volunteers came together to make this sweet rescue happen, and it's nice to be able to share some good news.
