Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Earns #13 Seed, Will Host First Regional Since 2016

The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team learned their 2024 postseason fate this evening and Coach Gerry Glasco's squad has earned one of the top 16 seeds and will be hosting a Regional at Lamson Park.

While the Cajuns lost on Saturday in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship Game to Texas State, the season resume was still enough for the team to be rewarded with the 13th overall seed.

The Cajuns will be the top seed in the Lafayette Region and will be joined by Princeton, Ole Miss, and Baylor.

The Cajuns will play their first game on Friday, May 17 against the Ivy League Champions Princeton Tigers. Ole Miss and Baylor will play in the other game. (And a reminder, that this four-team tournament is double-elimination.)

Other Sun Belt Conference schools to make the NCAA tournament include postseason champs Texas State and South Alabama as an at-large.

The LSU Tigers are the #9 national seed and will also host a Regional.

California, Southern Illinois, and Jackson State will join the Tigers and compete in the Baton Rouge Regionals. The Tigers will face Jackson State in their opening game.

Southeastern Louisiana is the other Louisiana school to make the postseason tournament. The Southland Conference champs will be in the Tuscaloosa Regional and will play Clemson in their first-round game.

The Season for the Ragin' Cajuns

UL ended the season with an overall record of 42-17. They also finished the Sun Belt Conference regular season at 22-2.

But the team's stellar schedule ultimately helped their hosting cause. The Cajuns had the toughest non-conference schedule in the country while also ranking #7 overall in strength of schedule.

A little history

This will be the 13th time in school history that UL will host a Regional. However, it's been a while since the last one as the last time they hosted was in 2016.

The Cajuns have made a total of eight Super Regionals since that format was introduced in 2005.

Overall, the program has been to the Women's College World Series six times in total. The last appearance in the WCWS, though, was in 2014.
