Tropical System to Affect South Louisiana Weather This Week
(KMDL-FM) If you ask people in South Louisiana if this has been a busy tropical season, they might say yes. Louisiana has been affected by three named storms this tropical season; none of them were hurricanes, but they were named tropical storms.
It looks like another named tropical storm will bring inclement weather to our state by midweek, especially over the weekend. This weather scenario is actually good news for Louisiana. The tropical system in question is known as Hurricane Polo.

Polo is currently a Major Hurricane and is forecast to move into Baja Mexico later today. The system will weaken once it makes landfall. But the winds won't be the issue for Louisiana and the Gulf South.

Moisture from that system is now spreading over the desert southwest and western Texas. By Wednesday, and especially Thursday, that moisture will be here in Louisiana.
Not only have forecasters bumped up the threat of rain for Wednesday through Saturday, but many of the forecast models are calling for heavy downpours. The Weather Prediction Center has already placed extreme western Louisiana at risk for heavy downpours on Wednesday. That risk increases over almost all of South Louisiana by Thursday.
When Is the Heavy Rain Expected in Acadiana and South Louisiana This Week?
Meteorologist Breyanna Lewis with Acadiana News First has noted in her extended outlook for the region that the unsettled weather and potential for heavy downpours might stay with us all the way through Saturday. As of this morning, Breyanna had rain chances of 60% for both Thursday and Saturday, with a 70% probability on Friday.
What Is the Threat For Severe Storms in South Louisiana This Week?
The Storm Prediction Center has not placed any parishes in Louisiana at risk for severe storms this week. It does look as if the greatest concern from this week's system will be rainfall, and more so heavy downpours of rain. There could be rainfall rates that exceed an area's ability to drain; this could lead to street and nuisance flooding during some of the heaviest downpours.
How Will Homecoming at the University of Louisiana Be Affected By Weather?

Another concern with the weather this week would be homecoming festivities at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns will host Arkansas State in the annual Homecoming Football Game on Saturday, but other events during the week might have to be rescheduled or moved should weather become a factor.

And for those of you still hoping for a cold front that will make it actually feel like fall, you're going to have to wait at least two weeks; we don't see anything in the long-range models that will bring a real chill in the air before then. October 15th is usually when we get our first "cool morning". We'll have to see how Mother Nature feels about that.
