Abbeville Traffic Closures, Drone Restrictions Set Ahead Of Landry Announcement

ABBEVILLE, La. - Drivers heading through downtown Abbeville Tuesday morning will want to plan ahead as local law enforcement prepares for what could be one of the biggest economic development announcements in recent South Louisiana history.

Gov. Jeff Landry is scheduled to make a major economic development announcement at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, at Magdalen Place in Abbeville. Multiple reports indicate the announcement is expected to involve SpaceX and plans for a major project near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish.

There has also been speculation about whether SpaceX founder Elon Musk could attend the announcement. However, as of Tuesday morning, his attendance had not been publicly confirmed. Lawmakers familiar with the event told the USA TODAY Network they were unsure whether Musk would be there.

Ahead of the event, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office announced temporary traffic closures and drone restrictions that will affect parts of Abbeville from approximately 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Roads Closing In Downtown Abbeville Tuesday

According to VPSO, roadways inside the perimeter formed by Railroad Avenue, State Street, Main Street and East Saint Victor Street will be closed to vehicle traffic during the event.

The perimeter roads themselves are expected to remain open.

The sheriff's office said the closures could be lifted earlier if the event concludes and conditions allow. Deputies and assisting law enforcement agencies will be positioned throughout the area to manage traffic and public safety.

Anyone traveling through downtown Abbeville during that three-hour window should consider an alternate route and allow extra time.

Drone Restrictions Will Be Enforced During Landry Event

VPSO is also warning drone operators that restrictions will be strictly enforced Tuesday.

Under Vermilion Parish Ordinance No. 2025-O-01, taking off or landing a drone within a two-mile radius of a designated event is prohibited unless the operator has received authorization.

Sheriff Eddie Langlinais said the restrictions are similar to those used during festivals and other large public events in Vermilion Parish.

The sheriff's office also noted that receiving authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration to operate in certain airspace does not override applicable local rules governing where a drone can take off or land.

Law enforcement drones are expected to be in the air during the event, and VPSO says agencies will actively monitor for violations.

SpaceX Announcement Expected To Draw Attention To Vermilion Parish

The heightened security comes as months of speculation surrounding SpaceX and South Louisiana appear to be approaching a major moment.

Landry's announcement is widely expected to reveal plans involving a SpaceX project in coastal Vermilion Parish near Pecan Island. Reports have described plans for a multibillion-dollar spaceport project connected to the company's Starship program.
