BEWARE: Louisiana Residents Warned About Active E. Coli Found In Ground Beef

Louisiana needs to pay special attention to the ground beef products they have purchased in the last few months. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a public health alert for ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. Coli and should not be consumed.

They have not requested a recall because the products are no longer being sold. However, customers may have purchased these ground beef products and put them in their freezers.

Louisiana, Check Your Freezers

The ground beef products to watch out for were produced on March 28, 2024. The products have a 'Use/Freeze by' date of April 22, 2024, on their packaging. However, many Louisiana families buy ground beef in bulk and freeze it in ziplock bags. If that's the case, it could be risky to chance it if you are eating beef from your freezer without the original packaging.

This warning includes loose ground beef, beef patties, and 5-10 lb beef chubs.

These products were shipped across the country to food suppliers and retailers, so they are very likely to be in freezers here in Louisiana. Anyone, or any institution, with these products in their freezers, is encouraged not to consume them and to either throw them away or return them to where they were purchased.

Seek Medical Attention If You Have The Following Symptoms:

These symptoms typically affect the individual 3-4 days after consuming the bacteria.

• dehydration
• bloody diarrhea
• abdominal cramps

FSIS also reminds consumers that ground beef should only be consumed with an internal temperature of 160 F.
