Healing House in Lafayette is changing the lives of grieving families across Acadiana every day.

November is National Child Grief Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the unique challenges children face when grieving the loss of a loved one.

This month, Caroline's Cookies, a beloved local bakery in South Louisiana, has partnered with Healing House, a Lafayette-based organization that provides critical support and resources to grieving children and their families—completely free of charge.

More Than Just Cookies

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Caroline Merryman, the owner of Caroline's Cookies, inside the Healing House space. She shared that after just one tour of the Healing House facility, she was immediately moved to tears and knew this was a nonprofit she wanted to support in any way possible.

"Members of my team have lost parents, and I watched my cousins lose their father, so I have seen the impact that grief has," Merryman said.

Throughout November, every purchase of the Cinnamon Roll Cookie—topped with a blue butterfly in honor of childhood grief awareness—will directly benefit Healing House. Caroline explained, "It's more than just cookies; it's a way to help this incredible organization in our community."

She chose the cinnamon roll flavor, a fan favorite, because she knew it was something customers already loved. "It was a no-brainer," she said. The cookie is topped with her signature cream cheese frosting and a white chocolate blue butterfly. (And yes, we ate every bite!)

Supporting Grieving Children: The Mission of Healing House

Healing House is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children cope with the complicated and often overwhelming feelings that accompany the death of a loved one.

With a mission to bring hope and healing, Healing House offers a safe and supportive environment where young people can express their grief, learn coping mechanisms, and connect with others who understand their experiences.

For the 800 children they serve—and counting—Healing House is a lifeline, offering resources, group counseling, and specialized programs to help children navigate the complex emotions of loss.

"Bad things, unexpected things happen every day—but when they happen to a child, the effects can be devastating," says the Healing House team. "Our mission is to provide the support and understanding that’s often so desperately needed after the death of a loved one. Grieving families are always welcome here."

These landmarks in and around Lafayette leave us in awe and, in some cases, make us think what their designers were thinking.
