Many government employees could get a nearly two percent raise beginning late January.

Chief Administrative Officer Dee Stanley tells KPEL newsradio there's been a seven month increase in city sales taxes compared to the year before.  The administration deferred the pay increase in July because of economic uncertainty according to Stanley.   The two million dollars it will cost to give employees the increase will come from existing revenue.

Stanley adds for many the nearly two percent increase will be less than the take home pay a year ago partly because of increases in health insurance premiums.

City Parish President Joey Durell is hoping the annual cost of living increase he submitted to the council Tuesday night will be approved by the council when it comes up for final adoption December 21st.
