WASHINGTON – United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., will post daily facts and trivia on her Web site about prominent African Americans during February, National Black History month. Posts will feature individuals of national and Louisiana significance, including athletes, inventors, politicians, musicians and writers.
“During Black History Month, we pause to learn from brave leaders, daring entrepreneurs, skillful inventors and many other figures in our past that call us to build a more just, equitable and prosperous future for all,” Sen. Landrieu said.
“African Americans were among the first to arrive in the New World, and they have lived and died to win and protect America’s freedom for centuries. African Americans have fought in every major American military conflict, from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars to the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II and the wars now underway in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“From politics and business to music and food, African Americans have helped to shape our state's vibrant past and continue to shape its hopeful future. The African American story is one of struggle and triumph.”
