WASHINGTON – United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today issued the following statement in response to the announcement by the Obama administration yesterday to allow 13 companies to resume deep-water oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. That drilling was suspended after the BP Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion last year.

Sen. Landrieu said:
“While we welcome in principle the administration’s stated intent to put these 13 deepwater drilling operations back to work, I’m not yet convinced this is entirely good news for Louisiana’s oil and gas industry.  We need to know more about the conditions under which drilling will be allowed to resume and make sure those conditions don’t actually undermine the intent.  We look forward to hearing more about how this action will affect companies with drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico.”
Since early June, the federal government has issued 26 new shallow water permits for oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, but no new deepwater permits.
