LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — A 19-year-old Leesville man charged in a July 2011 accident has been sentenced to three years in federal prison and three years' supervised release.

The American Press reports David Lamour Logan pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in May.

Authorities say he failed to follow a curving highway and ran off the road into a wooded area just inside the boundary of the Northwestern State University Fort Polk campus.

The accident claimed the life of his passenger, 19-year-old Vernon Scoggins III, of Hornbeck.

Authorities say Logan was intoxicated at the time and said he had consumed a large amount of beer and "spice" — material laced with synthetic cannabinoids — causing him to pass out and lose control of the vehicle.
