Louisiana Brewer Introduces Low Carb Option For Beer Drinkers
Diet Beer? Oh my gosh, what a time to be alive. Back in my drinking days one of the signs a man could point to regarding prowess for consuming barley malt beverages was the beer gut. But alas, thanks to today's healthier lifestyles and the beer gut has gone the way of the mullet and many brewers are taking notice of the new trend for "healthier" options when it comes to beer.
Louisiana's largest brewer, Abita Brewing Company, has introduced Hop 99. It's billed as a light IPA with only 99 calories and 2.7 grams of carbs. For comparison, a regular beer will have about 140 calories and 10.6 grams of carbs. So, for those who can drink and still do the math, this new brew might be a better option for you, if you're watching your calories and carbs.
This beer gave us the challenge to create a flavor-forward, drinkable IPA, while it gives beer drinkers a craftforward, sessionable option that significantly cuts the amount of carbohydrates and calories normally found in an IPA, or any category for that matter.
David Blossman, President & CEO of Abita Brewing Company made those comments in a press release announcing the company's new product. The new product will be available to consumers in 12-oz cans, ¼, and ½ draft kegs. The company plans to offer the product where ever Abita products are sold.
Health experts warn consumers to not misinterpret the connection between low carb, low-calorie beer and a healthy lifestyle. While there certainly are some benefits for choosing beverages with lower carbs and calories do not interpret that to mean the beverages are explicitly more "healthy".
