Louisiana Considered One of the Most Dangerous Place to Live Alone
Maybe it's time to look for a roommate or adopt a dog.
Throughout my college years and even the first few years after graduation, I lived alone quite a bit. There were roommates that I loved, but I really loved having my own space. However, there were times that I felt lonely and also times when I felt unsafe.
I can only imagine how my parents felt about me being alone.
According to A Secure Life, more and more Americans are choosing to live alone. Go ahead and blame social media for driving us all apart. About 27 percent of people (as of 2013) want their own space. However, there is risk involved with being on your own. That same website looked at crime rates, law enforcement presence, and percentages of singles to determine the most dangerous state to live alone in.
Louisiana came in at number 10.
That's not exactly what you want to hear, especially if the ink is still drying on your solo lease renewal. There are things you can do to protect yourself. Start by updating the looks on your doors and installing a security system. These serves as great lines of defense should someone decide to press their luck with your home. A Secure Life also recommends you get to know your neighbors. These people can turn into a neighborhood/complex watch. You look out for them and they look out for you. You can also adopt a dog which can serve as great mode of deterrence. I also think it's smart to have some sort of protection you can easily get to in case of an emergency.
And, like dad always says, keep your head on a swivel and be aware of your surroundings.
